It’s not just snowstorms we have here in the Philadelphia-area. Summer thunderstorms can also bring power outages, flooding, and downed trees. In fact, if you’re reading this in June 2019, the recent flooding and power outages will be fresh in your mind.
There are many things that you can do to help protect your home during these storms, as well as ways your Advent Security system is designed to help.
What to Do When Your Power Goes Out for More Than 4-5 Hours
Your home alarm system has a backup battery that usually lasts 4-5 hours. Which means, in most scenarios, it will be fine. Your security system will still function and there’s nothing to worry about.
If there has been an extended power failure, we do recommend unplugging the battery to help preserve it. Every system is a bit different, so customers are provided with information after the system has been installed. When the power goes out, we at Advent are just a phone call away and will help in any way we can. However, our phone lines do get busy when bad weather hits, so knowing how to handle your system in the case of a power outage can mean you spend less time on the phone.
What About Flooding or Water in Your Home?
Some home security systems can detect leaks or water where it shouldn’t be. If your basement has a pump to reduce flooding, you can install a sensor so if the pump is no longer working, you will be notified so you can act quickly. Washing machine leaks, burst pipes, excessive rainfall, roof leaks, or any reason water is in your home in places it shouldn’t be, water sensors will alert you.
If you have Alarm.com with Advent, water sensors can be part of your integrated smart home security and have the potential of saving your home from costly repairs. We can install these sensors in your bathrooms, basement, laundry room, or anywhere that you have plumbing. Then, the smart home security system will monitor these areas to detect potential water damage. If anything seems amiss, you’ll receive text notifications. This can give you more information, so you can help to protect your home.

In summary, if the power outage is short, there’s nothing to worry about. Your system will continue to run on its backup battery. However, for longer power outages, you may want to disconnect the battery. Just remember to reconnect it as soon as the power is restored.
